basically a backhanded compliment but instead of it sounding like a compliment but is a subtle insult, it sounds like an insult but is a subtle compliment.

kid 1: “dang bro, you suck at playing your instrument, but you’re the best in your section, which is good, i guess”
kid 2: “that was the worst backfronthanded compliment i’ve heard, but thanks”
kid 1: “you’re welcome”

a small compliment that is presented at the forefront of a hailstorm of insults

Example of a barbed compliment:
"You're a very smart person, but you're so lazy that you can never get any work done. The only thing you're actually good at is being nice to people, and even that is a lie, because of how selfish and self-centered you are. You're honestly just a burden to everyone who knows you."
