straight edge

"Straightedge" was a song by Minor Threat recorded in the early 80s. No drugs, no excessive drinkin, or casual sex. Being straight-edge is not following a set of rules, it is following an ideal. People who are straight-edge are not against drinking, they are against drinking excessively; alcohol is not poisonous in small quantities, nor do such small quantities alter your state of mind. The whole principle behind sXe, as it is referred to, is purity/clarity of body and mind.

To see where straight-edge came from, here are the lyrics to "Straightedge" written by Ian McKaye of Minor Threat in 1981.

"I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and fuck my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white shit up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need

I've got the straight edge

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope
'Cause I know I can cope
Laugh at the thought of eating ludes
Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never want to use a crutch

I've got the straight edge"

As you can see, sXe is not against drinking; it's against getting messed up.

More recently, some who are sXe are also against eating processed foods which can also poison the body, or against eating meat. Most straight-edge people also refrain from casual sex, as they beleive that too is a form of mind-poison.

Also, while being straight-edge doesnt mean you CAN'T drink, most of those who are sXe do not.
Guy: "Hey man, wanna hit?"
sXe: "Nah, I'm straight-edge."

straight edge

a movement created by the government targeting ignorant punk rocking teenagers. they don't have casual sex because they can't get any pussy. if they did, they wouldn't be against it. even though people who drink and get high don't have a problem with people who don't, straight edgers have a problem with them because straight edgers are arrogant.
the straight edge movement is often associated with "music" played by people who have no ability to play their instrument. they compensate by turning their amplifiers up to the point where the "music" loses clarity and becomes unaudible loud noise. the people at the concerts pretend to like the noise because to them, everyone else seems to be enjoying it.
like all trends, straight edge will die out eventually, and the teens who were once part of it will grow up and not be able to get a job because noone wants to hire a someone with X's tattood all over them.
so the next time a straight edge hassles you and slaps a beer out of your hands, kindly break the bottle of his head.
Bob: Hey Bill, let's go find some people who aren't straight edge and impose our will upon them, then tell them they are inferior!
Bill: OK!

Beliefs ushered in through the lyrics and then-beliefs of Ian Mackaye (Teen Idles, Minor Threat era). Although he exclaims fervently that he did not mean to start a movement, and defended himself in the second version of "Out of Step", it did spark a movement.

Basic Beliefs:
No drinking
No smoking
No promiscuous sex

Newer Innovations:
Atheism - idea of "think don't pray"
Veganism / Vegetarianism
Exemption from Painkillers, Caffine etc.
Hardline Ethic

Symbols:
xXx - supposedly for each of the main beliefs
sXe - straight edge abbreviation
X on the hands - typically seen at shows
x *lame screename* x - seen in every aim window

Types of Edge Kids:
1) The one who knows straight edge is a personal lifestyle and keeps his beliefs to himself

2) Pseudo edge kid, who puts x's on his hands at every show, goes vegan, and sells out the following month

3) Hardline kid - tries to force edge on others, just a meathead who has no idea of the positive nature straight edge is supposed to be

Edge Bands:
Gorilla Biscuits
Chain of Strength
Judge
Strife
Earth Crisis
xLimpwristx
Champion
Have Heart
Allegiance
Carry On
"I was reliving all those times we shared, and it's hard,
because you used to be so strong but time has changed you.
You turned away.
I keep trying to escape from the past.
But those days used to mean so much.
We stood side by side and nothing else mattered.
We were straight edge and at least I still am."

straight edge

If you are straight edge you are basically someone who respects their body and wants to live a healthy life. You don't drink, do drugs, or engage in promiscuous sex. Most straight edge people are teenagers (because they are under 21); therefore these are the smart teenagers...you know, the ones that can actually have fun without putting toxins in their body or randomly hooking up with people to pass the time.
"hey you wanna get drunk tonight?"
"no man, I'm straight edge, I can have fun without help."
