This usage comes from the phenomenon of birds (particularly crows) being attracted to shiny objects.

Sarah was going to write her paper, but Myspace looked shiny.

shiny sousaphone

An improved rusty trombone. It is a maneuver similar to a 69, but instead one participant performs a rusty trombone while receiving oral gratification. The name is derived from how one partner is "wrapped" around the other being played like a sousaphone. Preferably one of the performers is standing.

Steve slipped a disk the other day when he received a shiny sousaphone from Shannon the other night.

Used by fans of the TV (short lived) show Firefly, to describe an idea/something that one likes (instead of saying brilliant, awesome, cool, neat, rad...?).

Shiny is used especially if the idea or thing is new or bright. Not used so much to describe old things or things that look old.

That big damn movie Serenity was so shiny!

Shiny Penny Syndrome

When a guy or girl sees a "shiny penny" (a hot guy or girl) & all their attention is focused on them until they see a newer, shinier penny (a new hot guy or girl) & they completely forget about the first penny.

Girl 1: "Josh is so hot. I think I really like him."

Girl 1: "HOLY CRAP HE"S SO GORGEOUS!"

In certain parts of the midwest (namely Des Moines, Iowa), one uses the term "Stiny" when referring to the Lord Jesus Christ.
