Gay has a lot of meanings. It can either refer to a homosexual man, or like its orginal meaning, express feeling "content" or "happy". Gay can also refer to something unpleasent, or be used as a derogatory term, or insult.
1: Did you know that Terry finally came out as gay?
2: Our hearts were gay and lifted when they assured us that Philip survived the war.
