Spanish slang. "Puta" means roughly "fuck" or "bitch," and "madre" means "mother." The two words toghether become a common expletive meaning "holy shit" or "mother fucker."

In the north of Spain, if the article "la" (meaning "the") is added to the beginning of the phrase ("la puta madre"), it becomes a high compliment meaning that something is the coolest of its kind (similar to calling it the bomb, or the shit.)

Profesor: Clase, tengo una sorpresa para ustedes. ¡Hay un examen hoy!
(Teacher: Class, I have a surprise for you. There is a test today!)
Estudiante: Ese puta madre. ¡No estudié!
(Student: That mother fucker. I didn't study!)

Profesor: Clase, tengo una sorpresa para ustedes. ¡No más exámenes, jamás!
(Teacher: Class, I have a surprise for you. No more exams, ever!)
Estudiante: ¡Ah! ¡Profesor, eres la puta madre!
(Student: Wow! Teacher, you're the coolest ever!)

In Mexico the most sacred thing in the world is our mother, so it can have very different meanings deppending on the setting, but none of them refers to your mother, so take it easy, unless you're in a Mexican slum, if that's the case run immediately.

"Puta madre": Fuck this shit"; Holy shit!"; No fucking way!; I screwed it up; What have you done?; Again?

"Está de puta madre!": It's the shit!; That's awesome!, You made it great!; Congratulations
"¡Tú puta madre!": Fuck you!; Go the hell!; No shit!
"La puta madre": Not again; What should I do; Fuck this shit
"Chingas a tu puta madre": Go fuck yourself; You're going to die!; Go botter someone else bitch!

But as in English, it does not always have a negative context.

- My dude: Hahahaha you're ugly as fuck dude.
- Me: Jajajaja tu puta madre. (Hahahaha fuck you)

- Me: Please mom, I don't want to go to school today.
- Mom: Puta madre, pero me ayudas a limpiar la casa. (Fuck this shit, again?, alright, but you're going to help me to clean the house.)

- Some guy in Tepito: Eh puto! Dame lo que traigas o chingaste a tu puta madre. (Hey bitch! Give everything you have or you're dead.)
- Me: But I'm your neightbor dude!
- Some guy in Tepito: Ah siii, eres el gringuito, órale pues, dame para los cigarros y te vas. (Oh yea! You're the gringuito Little gringo, ok then, just give me money for cigars and we're ok. 50 pesos should do, 2~5 usd, if you don't have any change, giive him the first bill or coin you have in your pockets)

The Peruvian style (mostly in the south) of expressing anger or disbelief. Sometimes people just say "puta" - although when you add "madre" after it makes the saying more explicit/severe.

(literally means: mom-whore - - chat abbv.: "pm")

In other words its a spanish version of how english speakers say "Holy Shit"

"puta" is Spanish's Castilian word for fuck and "madre" is a word in spanish used for mom and spanish in English's point of view "switches" the descriptive word with the noun henceforth "puta madre" translates into mother fucker. "puta" used with other words can change its meaning some words with a at the end can be directed to woman as whore or bitch, usually when the word it combines with is has e or o at the end is made fuck and directed at men. But all you really need to know is that that if it is directed at some one it is an offense if at no one or randomly said it is an exclamation.
the word is Spanish's most commonly used swear word it is just as abused as the English word "fuck"

A phrase used in spanish language to express anger or discomfort towards a situation, mainly, towards and adversity.
Contextually, "puta" may mean "fuck" or "whore", and madre means "mother". But instead of the phrase's literal translation ("A mother who is a whore"), its intended meaning in english falls more adequeately in the terms of "Damn it", "Fucking Hell", "SHIT!" , or "FUCK! FUCK! FUCKING FUCK!"
