Kumpel
Because the German Language doesn't differentiate between friend and boyfriend, you call your male friends "Kumpel", to ensure a newly met person, knows that he's not your boyfriend, but instead your friend.
Example:
Mein Kumpel hat neulich. . . -> "my friend has recently . . ."
Mein Freund hat neulich. . . -> "my boyfriend has recently. . . " or "my friend has recently . . ."
May also be used by hetero males to make clear they are straight.
