To work as an independent contractor instead of an employee (USA). Employees on company payroll use form W2 for tax purposes. Contractors who bill instead of being paid a salary use form 1099. Companies can save money they would pay in benefits by putting people into this status. Examples include car ridesharing service drivers.

I have to find my own health care coverage now that my company 1099'd all the drivers.
