"mae" is Costa Rican slang for "dude", or "bro". It is a friendlier version of "playo", and can be used to refer to anyone, no matter if you know them or not.
Masculine: "un mae, ese mae"
Feminine: "una mae, esa mae"

"que mae? todo bien? (what mae? everything good?)
"si mae, todo bien" (yeah mae, everything good)
