the dissonance between what is expected and what actually occurs, specifically with regards to any public event or natural disaster that can be discussed on a mass scale prior to its realization. greatly facilitated by journalism and the news media, but has soared to new levels with the rise of social media and "viral" sharing
Person 1: "Man, after all those fatalistic tweets and news stories about Hurricane Irene, I really expected the worst. Now the streets are dry again but I'm left with two flashlights, thirty sets of batteries, three months' worth of nonperishable items, and a bathtub full of water."
