A region of the United States that has an expanding economy and that's growing in population primarily due to people immigrating to it from outside the south or outside the United States. The south has alot of undeveloped land so real estate is dirt cheap, almost worthless, and over-all wages are lower than other regions of the United States; these things, along with an almost complete absence of unions and a popular culture that's historically somewhat subservient to authority and somewhat passive aggressive, make it to some extent desirable to big business. there's also more violent crime than other regions, alot of obese people, and alot of people who claim to be more Godfearing and more patriotic than nasty yankees.
my sister moved down to the south, and she's surprised at the high crime, large number of obese people, and phoney,exaggerated religious and patriotic attitude.

The northern half of the United States, pretty much any region where the only people who say y'all are african american. A region of the United States that has less obesity,violent crime,poverty,and divorce than "The Bible Belt" i.e. The South. A region of the United States where people don't have the need to brag about how Godfearing and patriotic they are or how more American they are. A region of the United States that has a temperate 4 season climate, where it isn't scorching, unbearably hot much of the year. A region of the United States that contains it's largest,most productive cities and metro areas (yes, L.A. most deffinantly is not a southern city, and California is not The South.) The North has tremendous diversity in everything from politics to ethnic and racial groups contrary to what some southerners whine about. Massachusetts has had republican governors,no democrat, non-stop for the past 20 years, has a low crime rate, and the lowest divorce rate in the country. Fuck that fat drug addict,confirmed bachelor Rush Limbaugh. The cities with the lowest crime rates are in New Jersey,Conn,Cali, and Mass. The states with the highest crime rates,divorce rate,poverty,low sat scores,and obesity are southern.
The North is cool/cold in the winter,cool/warm in spring and fall, and hot in the summer. The North has a high population density, it's crowded. The state with the highest casualty rate in the Iraq War and it's aftermath is Vermont, not a southern state. New York City had a higher rate/proportion of it's young men in the army during vietnam than any southern city. My father is from The South and managed to escaped.
