Safetynetting

Claiming or implying that your message is a joke, ironic or sarcastic when it in reality is conveying your actual intent. Safetynetting is usually used when you're afraid of being judged or criticised for your message, because it is perceived as stupid.
Alice: Just travelled here all the way from Germany, I'm absolutely exhausted...
Bob: Isn't that just next to Colorado? It's not that far, is it? (I'm just kidding)
Alice: Stop safetynetting you idiot, if you're terrible at geography then just admit it
