Obarism

Obarism is the rather glamorous style of Wakame Shadows inspired Mecha shading done by Masami Obari.

Yousuke Kabashima coined the term Obarism to reference the kinds of gloriously glamorous shading done by his Mecha maestro of a friend Masami Obari.

Kanadapunk

Kanadapunk is a hybridisation between Yoshinori Kanada’s multiple styles and various punk music subgenres, more often Garage Punk and Art Punk as well as Skate Punk and Street Punk.

Thank Hisashi Mori of the Hisashi Punch fame for the increasing the international scope of the Kanadapunk movement.

Obari Workout

An Obari Workout is what happens when a bunch of super robots get redesigned by Hirotoshi Sano’s or Masami Obari’s own strong involvement to look a lot more awesome on the screen.

Dangaioh is one of the first shows to be associated with the Obari Workout that still has awed fans to this day. So is Gundam Wing.

Obari as Fuck

Obari as Fuck refers to a visual effect shift where a mech, more often a stunning giant robot, suddenly makes a rather major entrance into a very awesome battle with a lot of fanservice. Popularised by Shin Matsuo and Masami Obari in their Transformers works.

At first Thunderking from Transformers was like a busy big bad, then he was Obari as Fuck!

Himbo Menace

A Himbo Menace is a brilliantly bashful yet lazy, sometimes super powered Common Beauty with otherwise slightly more realistic goals than a Menace Stu.

Goku and the Mazinkaiser version of Koji Kabuto are great examples of a Himbo Menace done mostly right.

Toonamemeist

A Toonamemeist is usually an American or Australian anime fan who likes to funnily meme upon works that aired on Toonami, usually during the block’s own chaotic early years.

Shotaro Ishinomori would’ve been awestruck by the fact that Kikaider has inspired even a well meaning Toonamemeist this time around. Same for Outlaw Star!

Schmuck Them Up

A Schmuck Them Up is what happens when a usually resourceful Big Bad becomes too tired to ever win. Popularised by Dragon Ball Z and Gundam elsewhere, outside Japan.

To precede the Obari Workout, Gigantor and Mazinger Z have even done their own very successful Schmuck Them Up towards a robot bad guy!
