Cultural expert Louis Elton coined the term Bopea after noticing the vanguard of people who, having rejected the ‘refined hedonism of the globalised Brooklyn-Shoreditch urban creative class’, are searching for a more Romantic, rural life of making, brewing, fermenting and foraging. They draw inspiration from the bohemian ethos (that’s the ‘bo’) and enjoy a ‘neo-medieval peasant worldview’ (that’s the ‘pea’), where tactile and community-driven making practices supersede capitalist or material pursuits. Knitting, cold-swimming, brewing and fermenting are all typical Bopea activities, with rewilding (‘be that rewilding nature, or rewilding the gut’
