In the post-apocalyptic radio series "Tales from the Afternow," Server Monks are "monks that get a cybernetic jack in the crown of the head, usually between the eyes on the forehead, to allow them to connect to the Internet and walk through a virtual world. They worship Server as a god and are the masters of the virtual world. They reside in temples and have acolytes and petitioners that cater to their needs."

In popular parlance, the term is sometimes used to indicate a person with an intuitive and deep affinity for technology, or someone who needs to constantly be "plugged in" in order to feel comfortable.
"Since I got a phone with Internet access, I've become such a Server Monk. It makes me nervous to be without Wikipedia even for a second!"
