(In Arabian or Muslim mythology) an intelligent spirit of lower rank than angels, able to appear in human and animal forms and to posess humans.

(In Persian mythology) a mythical superhuman being, originally represented as evil but subsequently as good or graceful genie or fairy

Usually shown in sci-fi stories. i.e., "she turned around and saw the Peri behind her."
