the Whyte notation of a 2-8-2 steam locomotive. the type originated from a group of Japanese type 9700 2-8-2 locomotives that were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the 3 ft 6 in guage of japan. the type was developed from the 2-8-0 type, the extra trailing wheel suported the cap allowing more equipment to fit inside.
