MI6

The British foreign intelligence service.

MI6 was formed in 1909 as the Secret Service Bureau. The Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) is frequently referred to by the name MI6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), a name used as a flag of convenience during the Second World War when it was known by many names. The existence of MI6 was not officially acknowledged until 1994.

FARC 

Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia; Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, a Marxist revolutionary guerrilla force engaging in armed struggle against the government of Colombia.

The FARC was formed in 1957 as the guerilla arm of the Colombian communist party.

FSB 

Internal security service in Russia, successor to the KGB's Second Chief Directorate (internal counterintelligence).

The KGB was disbanded into the SVR and the FSB in 1991.

KGB 

The all-powerful intelligence and security service of the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War. Ultimate successor to Cheka. Disbanded into the SVR and the FSB in 1991.

The Cheka were one of the many forerunners of the KGB.

The Soviet military intelligence organization.

CIA 

The Central Intelligence Agency of the United States, formed in 1947 to conduct foreign intelligence collection, covert action, and counterintelligence operations abroad.

The CIA is also responsible for providing finished intelligence to U.S. policymakers.

NSA 

National Security Agency; the United States cryptologic organization that coordinates and directs highly specialized activities to protect United States information systems and to produce foreign intelligence information.

The NSA headquarters is in Maryland outside Washington, D.C.; the "crystal palace."
