The annulus is a ring of tissue on a mushroom's stem left by a torn partial veil.

The veil has ruptured allowing the mushroom's spores to float away. All that's left is the annulus right below the gills.

You see those little white strands hanging off the root of the plant? Those are arbuscular mycorrhizal.
