When you are walking at an awkward distance from someone you barely know (Close enough that you can't ignore them but far enough away that you would need to wait or speed up if you wanted to talk to them)

Mary wanted to ask Steve if he was going to the party, but because they were walking gapidly, she was too embarrassed to do anything more than wave awkwardly.
