A term used to categorize the southern portion of latin america and countries around the Rio de la Plata basin that are more industrialized, politically stable and heavily caucasian, (due to european migrations in the 19th century, mainly Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Polish and French). The word was set to differentiate the poorer and far more unstable neighbouring countries on the upper portion of latin america, such as Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and etc.
The word's definition is said to include countries such as: Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, although Uruguay and Paraguay are occasionally left out.
