To throw up your gang sign. For example, different gangs run different neighborhoods, so throwing up their sign represents the hood they own.

Blood: "Wat you ride niggah?! Throw ya hood up!!"
Crip: "McKinley Av muthafucka!!"
Blood: CK!! *pumps lead into the guy who threw up the wrong hood*
