Get the Bee's Knees mug.
Slang from the 1920s. Possibly a corruption of the word business. Another possibility is that it is derived from the expression, "be all end all" a.k.a. "B's and E's" which when said would sound like, "Bees-an-ees". Simply defined as the best, latest, and greatest. (Synonymous with other 1920s slang: The cat's pajamas and the cat's meow. A more current version would be The shit.).
"Johnny got a new car. It's the bees knees.", "Roger is so handsome. He is just the bees knees."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the origin of "bee's knees". It is a slang homophone for "business" started around the Roaring '20s. Saying something was the business meant it was the real deal and of high quality. See business definition #4, #9, #12, etc.: "top quality. a perfect 10. met to standard."
