rep era (n.) is short for "reputation era", and is coined from the period of time when singer-songwriter Taylor Swift teased and dropped her sixth studio LP "reputation". during Taylor Swift's rep era, she cleared out all of her social media, disappeared from the media and the public eye, and created a dark and edgy persona for herself during the album cycle of 'reputation'. there are multiple reasons for Taylor to introduce her rep era, but mainly it is because of the destruction of her public image (her reputation).

nowadays, 'rep era' is used as a slang term -- specially in Stan Twitter -- where either (1) a popular celebrity clears their social media and disappears from the focus of the media; (2) a popular artist is expected to drop a project (i.e. single, EP, LP) with a dark and edgy theme; or (3) a person (doesn't have to be a celebrity) is getting cancellations and backlash for something controversial or questionable that they did or said.
