Often used as a sales term to describe how to motivate a potential buyer to buy based on what other people are doing. Also referred to as "Keeping up with the Jones's." Salesperson: "I just came from Mr. Jones and he liked my product so much he bought three." This is an example of the Jones Effect.

When your favorite restaurant is closed on certain days or at a certain time and your craving for it becomes stronger during those periods. I usually feel the Jones Effect on Sunday because Paseo is closed and I cannot get my Midnight Pork sandwich.
