The deathbed scenes in the novels of Dickens are famously cloying: as Oscar Wilde said, "One would need a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell without laughing."
Something that in small doses is desirable or pleasant, however in large doses becomes disgusting. Deserts that are overly sweet are described as cloying since they would be delicious if they contained less sugar. The judges on the Food Network show "Chopped" use the terms "cloying" or "cloyingly sweet" to describe a repulsively sweet dessert. An example of a cloying dessert would be a sugar cookie with a frosting that used refined sugar, honey, powdered sugar, sweetened chocolate and high fructose corn syrup. One bite and you would need an insulin shot.
This word can also pertain to people who are tolerable for short periods of time but become annoying and even repulsive if you have to spend an extended period of time with them. You say "hi" or smile as you pass them, but when they stop you to talk they become instantly cloying.
That Creme Brule'e icecream was so cloying, I threw it away after eating one bite. Too sweet for me.
I smiled at the hot chick in the office and she stopped to talk to me, after 5 minutes of her rambling on, she became cloying and now I avoid her.
Some of the most cloying celebrities are: Gilbert Goddfried, Jim Carey, Donald Trump, Kanye West, Chris Brown and Jessica Simpson. I can take them at first, but after a few minutes I have to change the channel.
