Appal - at - shun: Mountains on the eastern part of the US. Commonly mispronounced as "Appal - aye - shun" by people who do not and have never lived there.
Girl 1: Hi, I'm from North Carolina.
Girl 2: Really? North Car-o-laaaahhhnnaaa?
Girl 1 (annoyed): yes. From North Carolina. The western part; the Appalachian Mountains.
