Catching an L means catching a loss. In this sense, you catch an L if you say something stupid or, if you try to sound intelligent but are proved wrong.

In TheGeekEntry’s chat TheSnakeyezEntry accidentally typed L# in chat. From that day forward L# has become a staple of twitch chat. L# can be used in literally anyway because L# is all and describes all.
