I was talking to Dave the "High School Dropout," turned, "Google Expert." I spoke about the astrophysics class I was taking, and referenced the speed of light at 300 million meters per second. Dave said nothing and turned to Google. Soon after he replies, "Actually no. The speed of light is 299 792 458 meters per second."

A problem faced by a person with specialized expertise in any area, in which the implications of the opinion are unpopular and likely to be rejected by those who need that expertise. For example, economists may be likely to know that, in some cases, a "market solution" is inherently impossible, but proposing an alternative is an exercise not merely in futility, but career suicide among those who employ economists. It arises because the expert knows more about the field than her employers.
The statistician was asked by his boss to make a case for risk homeostasis, but knowing better, he faced an expert's dilemma: telling the truth would get him tarred as a 'socialist.'

An ailment characterized by the need to expound on a given topic beyond actual knowledge. The advanced sufferers are often unaware of the condition, loosing the ability to distinguish opinion from fact. Unfortunately there is currently no cure for Expert Syndrome, much like Catholicism.
Did you hear Karl going on about kernel internals at lunch? He has a serious case of Expert Syndrome.
