It's a term for a mistake so bad that it could change views from others permanently. Something you should most certainly not do, and you should know not to do it, but you do it thinking it's okay. Often used in sports to describe some mistakes prospects make. If a prospect make routine mistakes he should go on to have a good career. If a prospect makes grand mistakes- mistakes professional players do not make, he is going to be cut real soon and is just not able to develop into a star.
