triplet

A note in music that is 1/3 of a beat. Also called 12th notes(8th note triplets) or 24th notes(16th note triplets).

In 4/4 time:
8th note triplet = 1/12 measure
16th note triplet = 1/24 measure

in a group of three, the ugly triplet is the one that is left out whether it is because the other two are closer or using inside jokes. it is not necessarily unhealthy or third-wheeling, it inevitably happens in groups of three. they still connect in their own way.
