Metal, armor, chains, or scales tattooed on one's body to make one appear to be tougher than one actually is. The process does not make one's skin tougher, but tends to actually tenderize the muscles, having an adverse effect on the relative toughness of the skin.
The bouncer looked tough, but we noticed it was mostly just the squishy armor all over his arms.
