Poetterware is a type of software mostly found on Linux systems, for example systemd, pulseaudio, policykit, consolekit, xdg-open, colord and more.
This software generally works very well and solves really complicated problems, but if it doesn't behave the way it should, you will have a hard time debugging the issue (e.g. via dbus), working around it (by quick hacks) or use alternative software. It may be written by Lennart Poettering or the freedesktop foundation or other participants in the ecosystem.
You're using Gentoo Linux with systemd? Yes, although it's poetterware it works very well for me.

1. Software created by Lennart Poettering, notorious for its contentious and often disruptive innovations.

2. A term used derisively to describe software that, while aiming to revolutionize system architecture, frequently introduces complexity and controversy, leading to divided opinions among the developer community.
The new system update is full of poetterware, making simple tasks unnecessarily complicated and frustrating everyone involved.
