When you expect or thought you felt a text or a phone call, but instead you just got either an alert for a game, or nothing at all. You then feel embarrassed and read the time aloud, as if that was your true intention.
She checked her phone expecting to see a text from her friend. Nothing. "The time is 3:37," she read to her sibling who was watching her. She had successfully pulled off a "Time Check."

The most annoying phrase a person can use to assert their know-it-all "knowledge."
Republican: It is immoral, and we shouldn't be funding it!

Democrat: It should only be a choice made by that person, not an authority! And by the way, we don't fund it...private donors fund it! What do you have to say about that?

Republican: Well, last time I checked, it is against the Bible and against the law!

Democrat: Oh, really? When WAS the last time you checked?

Republican: Awhile back when I was reading the...

Democrat: Awhile back, huh? Well you know what? What you read before 1973 doesn't matter anymore, because it is in fact NOT against the law, and the Bible holds no authority because of separation of church and state!

in the sport of basketball, whenever a player makes 3 consecutive baskets from down town (3 3pointers) he/she has entered what is known as Heat Check Time. Heat Check Time entitles that specific player to the right of shooting the ball from anywhere and not be called a ball hog.
wow Vince just made 3 threes in a row... "HEAT CHECK TIME". "everyone pass it to him" ... (Vince then continues the streak to 7 in a row because of HEAT CHECK TIME)

A time to test your of will power, courage, fortitude, etc. Rarely does it involve any physical strength or skill, instead being an almost entirely mental challenge. First heard in the US Army, but has spread through usage amongst veterans and wrestling announcers.
when two or more wrestlers have been fighting for a long time, and are both exhausted, its gut check time, to get back into the match.
