Pronounced (Hi-us-taan)The Armenian word for Armenia, an independent republic in the Caucasus over only 10% of historic Armenia, with a population of around 3.5 million. It is surrounded by Georgia from the north, Turkey from the west, Azerbaijan from the east and Iran from the south. 90% of historic Armenia is presently occupied by Turkey, which organized and executed a genocide of the Armenian population in that area in 1915, resulting in the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians or "Hai"s (pronounced Hye)thus the word Haiastan.
