The Eastern Area of Los Angeles, which is a primarily Hispanic community now facing the unfortunate challenge of gentrification.
East La is also used as a metonym to describe the Arizona capital city of Phoenix. It was given that name because Phoenix itself is currently being flooded with Los Angeles transplants and is also falling to gentrification. It is also geographically east of Los Angeles.
"Man, I remember when Señora Guadalupe always made the best sopes on this street. It's too bad East LA is losing it's culture."
"Phoenix is just an East LA nowadays. So many folks from Los Angeles here..."
