The sorry state of elementary education today; in which "teaching to the test", as well as boring literature selections (which more often than not turn a child off from reading) are the new standard.

The story "A Very Important Day" (Houghton-Mifflin anthology) reads like the shipboard manifest of immigrants arriving from every conceivable country ---and the high point of the plot is the "characters" citizenship swearing- in ceremony .

Kids today don't even know what state they live in, but they do know how to do a powerpoint presentation full of misinformation----that's deaducation for you!

Black Dynamite Deduction

Where one deduces a solution to a problem or mystery by taking one clue and bringing it to another in a long chain of paranoid connections until it leads to the conclusion. Named after the famous ''Anaconda Malt Liquor Conclusion Scene'' in Black Dynamite, where the titular character somehow realizes that Anaconda Malt liquor was the government's secret weapon after Bullhorn said "melt in your mouth", making several arbitrary connections until it led to the answer.
