Top definition
A politically correct term for “living together minus marriage or religion”—when a heterosexual couple is entitled to the same legal benefits—such as inheritance, tax, and pensions—as a same-sex couple.
Unlike same-sex couples who can choose whether to enter a civil partnership or to marry, mixed-sex couples were previously not allowed to do so, unless they tie the knot to become husband and wife.
