Get the nitty grittymug. “Nitty-Gritty” originated in midst of the 18th century slave trade. Ships often carried slaves in the cargo holds below deck and nitty-gritty now means getting to the bottom of it. This is a derogatory reference to the slaves which were held at the bottom of the vessel.
