Compulsive gamblers, daily options traders, and shit/memecoin traders tend to ironically label themselves as this. They are willing to risk their last dollar or go into debt for another taste of the action. Other vices such as alcohol, cocaine, and hookers synergize well with the lifestyle. All degens are degenerates, but not all degenerates are degens.

May also be used if the person is keeping up with previous family traditions in a way that stunts their progress amongst their piers. The progress could be in many forms and is not restricted to wealth, life skills or health and generally includes positive societal contributions as a major factor.
