A layover friend is it a person that you hang out with because the person you wanted to hang out with wasn't available or a person who has something that another person needs or wants, so that person is used or talked out of the item and then left behind.

Hey isn't that your friend, oh no, that's my layover friend. She gives me movie tickets for free, but I don't really like her .
