troll (Internet slang)

I. Noun (plural, trolls)

1. A person who posts to annoy, irritate or generally be off topic.

2. Traditionally used as in deploying benign harassment for the purposes of indoctrinating a noob into a message board by establishing the group norms through contrast.

3. In the modern sense, it has come to be synonymous with "a*shole."

II. Verb ('Net slang "to troll")
to offer up bogus statements meant to provoke a fight online

DISAMBIGUATION
NOT to be confused with TRAWL (fishing term, verb) to drag for, either in fishing or online...
Jackie was such a troll back on that usenet; that noob didn't even recognize she was being ironic. Maybe next time Sam will see it and laugh.

Sam is learning, but he acts as such a troll and stirs up so much controversy on the abortion boards it is a real turnoff to me.

Sam's page got trolled (verb, past tense) by those kids, and it made me crack up because he's so uptight, and they made him look slow and loser-ish by comparison.
