(Newb derives from Newbie. noob, nub, n00b are all acceptable substitutions for newb. It is commonly thought today that noob predates newb, which is incorrect. Real newbs have created a rift between the words newb and noob, which in reality is a mistake because they are synonyms. It is believed in the last 2 years with the emergence of kids born post-1990 in the gaming world that noob has become the more popular of the two because these newbs are searching for their own identity and 'original' word.

1) See also newbie. Someone in a game with little to no clue what they are doing. Easily beaten by the vast majority of other players. "That guy's a newb. Doesn't even know how to strafe."
2) Derogatory term for someone you don't like in a game. Often meant as a shot at their skill: "OMG u n00b!"

The term Newb started being used in US Navy, by sailors in the Seabees (CBs) rate during World War II. Seabees would call new Seabees NewBees. Navy Veterans like M.E. and others started calling new players on SoCom Newbees, later it was shorted to Newb.
