Latif

One of the 99 names of God in Islamic doctrine. It's best English translation is "gentle" or "incredibly gentle". In modern Arab and Muslim (and Arabized and Islamicized cultures) contexts, "ya Latif!" (Oh gentle one!) Is used as a declaration in some places that's kind of like "oh my god". However, it is specifically used when witnessing or experiencing something difficult, painful, or frightening. It can represent seeking refuge in the ultimate/god, but is also used firguratively by secular people.
Me: "My friend broke his leg at work today"
My algerian mom: "!يا لطيف" (Ya Latif! Oh gentle one!)
