A fake interested in being hip and different rather than interested in fine things themselves, be it philosophy, music or writing. Those (fans, maniacs, writers, people who love music with all of their hearts, etc) were always with us, but they're not externally cool, hip and different enough. A hipster condemns mainstream for being mainstream, not for those cases where mainstream has bad taste. Self-conscious at all times to be hip and cool, they actually look pretentious and vain.
Hipster to you: "A XXXXX band (you've never heard of) is cool, but Fatboy Slim, The Doors or Massive Attack? Too mainstream."

Get the hipster mug.So a hipster is 2 young to have the life experience 2 be wise yet is arrogantly morally superior/ judgmental, & absurdly closed-minded to any idea that challenges their dogma. They condemn racism but have never put it to the test by living in a 3rd world country, never even been uncomfortable or w/o tech toys. Choose to be thin but have never known/witnessed actual starvation. Judge/condemn others by body shape, hairstyle, clothing while claiming to be non-conformists. Constantly reduce human beings to 2 dimensional stereotypes, cluster in urban areas to reassure each other of their superiority rather than bravely dispersing to spread their values of unity, creativity, free thought, & racial integration to ACTUALLY change the world. I could go on pointing out the massive bias/ludicrously inaccurate hypocritical statements made here ( hipsters invented distressed jeans? Really? Diamond wash was commercially available in the 70s) but I will just summarize this article by saying it is completely delusional-the opinion of a 58 year old woman who lived in Jamaica 12 years, has Mexican & Jamaican daughters, traveled many countries, known true hunger, sacrificed to help others not just espoused beliefs on the internet to gratify my own ego, & doesn't feel superior to anyoneac, except possibly the moron that wrote this article.
Right after a free-thinking, open-minded hipster lays eyes on someone, they form an opinion based on a few spare facts, and know they are morally superior to someone who does not dress like them.

Get the hipster mug.A hipster is commonly identified by wardrobe labelled as "non-conformist", which tends to conform exactly to the traditional representation of a hipster. They tend to go to school for liberal arts courses, and flaunt their extensive education, while not realizing that a liberal arts degree gets you jack shit in the real world. An "accomplished" hipster, who has completed said degree, tends to spend a great deal of time in overpriced coffee shops such as Starbucks in order to appear "deep", and "introspective". They protest dressing to impress others, while spending outrageous amounts of money on pre-worn shirts and torn jeans, in order to "fit-in" with the other hipsters they look up to. They claim to be politically aware, but attack all conservative views as fascist, while not understanding the liberal views the claim to represent. You would be hard pressed to find a more contradictory or hypocritical drogue chute on the welfare of society as this sub-human genera. Avoid at all costs.
"Look at that hipster, complaining about how well educated he is, because he can quote statistics about whaling and global warming that he saw on the internet, while he's working at the McDonalds at the mall"
"What a non-conforming god he is, I wish I was as conscious about the world as he is"
"So do I... So do I..."

Get the hipster mug.Hipsters can be easily identified by their excessively portrayed personalities and attitudes of being "too cool for life," as well as their belief that they are "cooler" than others, all of whom in their eyes who follow trends/the mainstream (which is somehow not the same as hipsters following the hipster trend). 97% of all hipsters are hypocrites.
Hipsterism is highly contagious and can quickly spread to others if there is a high volume of hipsters present. Thus, if you live in an area with a high density of hipsters, the stores, restaurants, etc. will tend to reflect their tastes/lifestyle. Interestingly, despite being the trendiest of trends, neighborhoods that have suffered from hipsterism have generally increased in property value.
Hipsters frequently dress in the same general manner, despite describing that manner has being unique/individual. This usually includes vintage clothing, clothing from thrift stores, ironic clothing, plaid, tight pants, metro-sexual clothing, clothing meant to appear ragged/poor (despite it's wearer being middle to upper-middle class and receiving all their money from wealthy parents in the form of an allowance, rather than working/living in reality), etc. They may also wear unnecessary accessories such as scarves during the summer, sunglasses indoors, etc.
Hipsters are also associated with indie music, contemporary art, etc. Unfortunately, their attempts to turn away from the mainstream and "kitsch" to a more bohemian-like lifestyle has ruined much of what they now claim as theirs (ie: indie music is now dominated by a scene and has little to do with the actual music, contemporary art is plagued with over dramatic plays and poor work/weak conceptual ideas, coffee shop atmospheres are ruined by their judgmental attitude towards all non-hipsters, etc.) In essence, the things they helped to build have lost all value and meaning, but that is appropriate to the apathetic, lack of originality that is possessed by all hipsters.
Knowing the truth about what they are, most hipsters will deny that they are a hipster. However, it should be noted, there are some people who fit the hipster description and are legitimate in their interests, activities, and lifestyle, but this is extremely rare.
Despite their likely denials of being a hipster, and a belief in rugged individuality (which has turned into a conformity apart from "mainstream conformity"), to be a hipster, one must win the approval of other hipsters. Thus, it is impossible for a naturally "non-coo" person to ever achieve hipster status. This of course, is yet another contradiction. Over all, hipsters lead a judgmental, elitist lifestyle, as aforementioned, with a strong conviction in the belief that they are "cooler than life."
For some reason, hipsters like Pabst Blue Ribbon, possibly one of the worst, most watered-down beers available... Apparently it's cool to have bad taste, an important detail to remember for any aspiring hipster.
If one is at all unsure of whether a person is in fact a hipster, the yuppie/douche test never fails. If the person comes across in any way as a pretentious, hypocritical, yuppie douche, they are probably a hipster.

Get the hipster mug.Superficial substance. Trying to be the ultimate 'cool and original' person. Backwash individuals who lack complete personality, having the need to grasp onto vintage or unique items: clothing, accessories, music, etc. Having an unusual name can help.
"These totally unattractive sunglasses will surely be popular."
"How exciting, plaid is my favorite color."
"Balderdash, I've always wanted to be an orphan."
