To contribute towards the cost of something, generally in equal amounts, in order to share the purchased item.

It is hard to pin to a region as there is so little written about the word as it exists almost exclusively in colloquial speech, primarily in regional Manchester, England.

Alright lad, we’re renting a storage space and I thought you could benefit from it. If you put to, it’ll be cheaper for all of us.
