By name alone, this term was originally used to refer to a GIRL who acted like a boy in many ways (masculine), much the same way that a Nancyboy was a BOY who acted like a girl in many ways (feminine). The name TomBoy when used to refer to a female makes zero sense. NancyBoy (girl-boy) uses a girl's name to modify the boy's behavior. TomGirl (boy-girl)functions exactly the same way. TomBoy is, in essence, Boy-Boy.

A non-athletic, non-outdoor male who dresses like a manly jock in order to fit in with the manly jocks.
I decided to move in and take over when I realized the guy trying to sweet talk the redhead was a tomgirl.

The current equivalent of a “tomboy,” (which is a more outdated way to refer to a tough girl.)
Tomboy is a term that was most used and liked by trans guys and some nonbinary people, because the label “boy” in tomboy felt very affirming, and might still be used by closeted trans people today.
However, those who actually consider themselves girls today, may find the label “tomboy” to be insinuating that they’re toughness is a boy trait, which detracts from the fact that women can be strong. So maybe prefer to switch to the term tomgirl.
