By name alone, this term was originally used to refer to a GIRL who acted like a boy in many ways (masculine), much the same way that a Nancyboy was a BOY who acted like a girl in many ways (feminine). The name TomBoy when used to refer to a female makes zero sense. NancyBoy (girl-boy) uses a girl's name to modify the boy's behavior. TomGirl (boy-girl)functions exactly the same way. TomBoy is, in essence, Boy-Boy.
Sally is a Tomgirl, pursuing similar behaviors as the boys her age like football and baseball.
