herpetarianism is keeping amphibians and reptiles as pets, often devaluing traditional pets (dogs, cats) in the process. The word itself derives from herpetology, the scientific study of amphibians and reptiles.

Bob is totally into herpetarianism! He keeps snakes and frogs in every room.

A herpetarian is one who, although he may accept other animals as pets, definitely prefers amphibians and reptiles to them by a wide margin.

He has a whole house full of lizards and frogs; he is such a herpetarian!
