"VOCALOID" is a singing synthesizer produced by the YAMAHA corporation. You enter the lyrics of a song into the program, add music, and then you can have one of the Vocaloids sing for you. Some of the vocaloids are MEIKO, KAITO, Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, Gumi Megpoid, Kamui Gapuko, and Megurine Luka. Vocaloid is neither an official Anime or Manga. It is only a singing software.
My favorite "VOCALOID" is Kagamine Len!

A popular voice mimicking software originally made by Yamaha, though development has been took over by Crypton Future Media. One types in sounds and a 'voicebank' (recording of a human of all sounds in different pitches) will sing it. There is a multitude of these voicebanks for it including the renowned 'Hatsune Miku'

Hatsune Miku is a hugely popular 'virtual diva' made for the Vocaloid 2 software, she has a high voice and she has received complaints about being inhumanly high. The Hatsune Miku append was created adding a number of added voices of different tones/emotions to make for better songs. She is receiving an English update for Vocaloid 3, and is looking to be promising as of now.

There is many other, and in my opinion better voicebanks, but that doesn't mean some people who claim to be Vocaloid fans actually have never heard of any other than Miku.
*At Voca-con*
Vocaloid Poser: Are you actually a Vocaloid?

Me: I'm Kagamine Len! I'm hugely popular D:<.
Vocaloid Poser: Never heard of him, (lo, he's so obviously lying... poser).

*Next year*
Vocaloid Poser: Who are you?
Me: I'm a male Vocaloid called Utatane Piko.
Vocaloid Poser: Lol, Hatsune Miku is the only Vocaloid, idiot...

Is a voice synthesizer program that allows anyone to make their own songs using a pre-recorded sample of a language's phonetics.

Founded by Kenmochi Hideki in Spain, it was thought of a singing computer. Originally English, the first vocaloids using the Vocaloid software at the time were LEON and LOLA, both British-accented English released at the same time with the launch of the Vocaloid Software in January 15, 2004. MIRIAM was later released as a South African-accented English vocaloid. She was in the very first vocaloid concert in Russia, voice only. The very first Japanese vocaloids were MEIKO (November 2004) and KAITO (February 2006). Vocaloid 2 is an updated version, with its first V2, Sweet Ann. So far, all vocaloid were made for professional use.

Hatsune Miku was made in August 2007, who is the first vocaloid by Crypton Future Media, the first Japanese V2, and the first to have a character design for better marketing. She carried Vocaloid as well. Since then, every other vocaloid had a design for better marketing, but also to represent them.

Vocaloid 3 is a better version that supports 5 languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese. It also has realistic sounding vocals.

Vocaloid 4 is the latest updated version that allows the ability to growl, and cross-synthesis. By this time, there are over 90+ vocaloids.

Vocaloid isn't the first voice synth program, and there are other programs, like UTAU, Alter/Ego, CeVIO, NIAONiao, MUTA, Vocalina, etc.
Vocaloid IA is my favorite because she has a voice that can be quite plain and bland, but is very easy to use for my song-making career.

I don't like Miku because her voice leaves a ringing in my ears, not to mention she takes all the spotlight from the other vocaloids!

Vocaloid is an instrument, not your average idol.

Vocaloid is a software similar to UTAU, which produces UTAUloids. There are several characters with voicebanks. People use these characters to create songs, like “Amygdala’s Rag Doll” by GHOST. Popular Vocaloid producers include KIRA(formerly YusukeKira), GHOST and Kikuo. Often, people cover these songs. These
People are called “Utaites”. Examples of Utaites include:
- Mafumafu
- Soraru
- Raon
- JubyPhonic
- Lollia
- Reol

Vocaloid songs can range from being very innocent(Happy Halloween, Electric Angel) to dark and disturbing(Kitsune no Yomeiri, The Kitsune and the Spider-like Lion)to depressing, to romantic(Melt), to perverted(Gigantic OTN, Plus Boys).

Vocaloid has had quite an influence in Animation & Memes. Songs used in memes include:
- Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! ft. Hatsune Miku(Momone Momo cover though), used in Nyan Cat.
- Bocca della verita, ft. VFlower, used in the IHY meme.
- The aforementioned Amygdala’s Rag Doll, used in the Trypophobia meme.

- Electric Angel ft. Hatsune Miku(Kagamine Twins cover though) used in the Electric Angel meme.
- SIU ft. Hatsune Miku, used in the SIU meme.
- Monster ft. Gumi, used in the Monster meme.
And the list GOES ON!
