(Adjective): - Anger, bitterness, or sulkiness in response to a being put in a situation one finds disagreeable and/or unfair. For instance, one could be salty after experiencing a sporting or political defeat, having a joke made at one's expense, or being placed in an unpleasant situation (such as being given extra work by one's boss).
Being "salty" is generally a sign of emotional immaturity, as the situation is rarely as unfair as the salty individual believes it to be. Most of the time they're just whining because things didn't go their way.
Grumbling, sarcasm, snapping, moodiness, and even outright hostility are all examples of "salty" behaviour.
The term is likely derived from the fact that salt has an acrid and bitter flavour.

I thought "salty" only very recently acquired this meaning (see the other entries). However, I came across it in a book published in 1969 "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert A. Heinlein near the top of page 32.

When one of your friends can't handle almost anything going their way. Or when things just don't add up. Either getting upset or confused or just plain tagging them in things online to have fun.
Eg.
Marcel can't handle losing at a nice friendly game of magic the gathering, therefore he is being salty. Sometimes for an unprecedented amount of time. It could take years for the salt to disappear
